What Idaho requires
HB 92 (2023) directs every district, charter, and specially-chartered school to provide students in grades 9-12 one or more courses in personal financial literacy and money management. The State Board's graduation rule folded that into the Social Studies credit block as 'economics and financial literacy (one credit)' alongside 2 credits of government and 2 of U.S. history. Idaho Code § 33-1615 enumerates nine required competency areas districts must cover.
Districts may teach it as a blended Economics + Financial Literacy course (requiring a social-studies/economics-endorsed teacher) or split out a standalone financial-literacy portion (any certified teacher may teach it). The state also appropriated funding for teacher professional development, including summer institutes, to support the rollout.

Why Idaho schools choose Rapunzl
Idaho's HB 92 built personal finance into a combined one-credit Economics and Financial Literacy course inside the social studies block, and it has applied since the class of 2024. Districts can teach it blended, which needs an economics-endorsed teacher, or split the financial-literacy portion out for any certified teacher, so staffing shapes the choice. Rapunzl supports both: a live-market simulator where students manage a $10,000 portfolio for the finance competencies, plus economics modules for the rest. Idaho Code lists nine required competency areas, and the modules line up with them.
- 100,000+students have completed Rapunzl's curriculum
- 93%average financial literacy scores on national test over past 5 years, 24% above average
- 31interactive modules that can be customized into a course progression for your classroom
- 20+hours of gameplay in 2 interactive mini-games alongside our investment simulator and financial calculators
Teachers get a dashboard that exports grades and crosswalks each lesson to Idaho's economics and financial literacy standards, with materials in English and Spanish that work with a screen reader. Rapunzl's January scholarship competition gives students a reason to keep managing their portfolio after the course ends.
Idaho personal finance requirement FAQ
Idaho requires personal finance for graduation, folded into a combined 1-credit 'Economics and Financial Literacy' course inside the state's Social Studies requirement rather than standing alone.
The requirement is set by House Bill 92 (2023), Idaho Code § 33-1615; implementing State Board rule IDAPA 08.02.03.105.
Takes effect: Statute effective July 1, 2023; first implemented for the 2023-2024 school year.
1.0 credit — 'Economics and Financial Literacy,' one line item within the state's 5-credit Social Studies requirement.
Idaho's requirement is an embedded requirement.
In practice that means the personal finance content lives inside another required course, so every graduate covers it without a separate class on their schedule.
The Class of 2024 is the first graduating class that has to meet it, so earlier classes are not held to the requirement.
Timeline: Statute effective July 1, 2023; first implemented for the 2023-2024 school year.
If you are planning a course now, that timeline is the window to have curriculum in place before Idaho starts holding students to it.

Yes. Because Idaho's course combines economics and financial literacy, Rapunzl covers both: the six CEE pillars for the finance competencies and economics modules for the rest.
Students learn by trading a simulated $10,000 in real market conditions, and teachers manage the class from a dashboard with grade export, bilingual materials, and screen-reader support.
