What Arizona requires
Arizona's History & Social Science graduation block requires 3 credits, including one-half credit of Economics. SB 1184 (2019) amended that Economics requirement so it 'shall include financial literacy and personal financial management,' covering budgeting, saving, spending, credit, banking, and insurance. No separate course or credit was created — schools deliver the content within the existing Economics semester, so actual class time devoted to personal finance varies by district.
Since 2018 Arizona has also offered a voluntary State Seal of Personal Finance Proficiency (A.R.S. §15-260), earned through an approved curriculum, a proficiency assessment, co-curricular financial activity, and a college/career-readiness component. A 2024 bill (SB 1058) to require a fully separate standalone personal-finance course failed on the Senate floor, so the embedded-only model remains current.

Why Arizona schools choose Rapunzl
Arizona requires personal finance, but it lives inside the existing half-credit Economics course rather than a class of its own, and SB 1184 added no new credit to fit it. That means the finance content shares time with economics, so how efficiently a curriculum covers both matters. Rapunzl helps: a live-market simulator where students manage a $10,000 portfolio for the finance side, plus economics modules for the rest of the course. Students who want to go further can pursue the state's voluntary Seal of Personal Finance Proficiency, and the same modules support it.
- 100,000+students have completed Rapunzl's curriculum
- 93%average financial literacy scores on national test over past 5 years, 24% above average
- 31interactive modules that can be customized into a course progression for your classroom
- 20+hours of gameplay in 2 interactive mini-games alongside our investment simulator and financial calculators
Teachers get a dashboard that exports grades and crosswalks each lesson to Arizona's economics and financial literacy standards, with materials in English and Spanish that work with a screen reader. Rapunzl's January scholarship competition gives the embedded finance content a hook that outlasts the economics unit.
Arizona personal finance requirement FAQ
Arizona requires personal finance for graduation, but only as content folded into the existing half-credit Economics course, not as a separate standalone class.
The requirement is set by SB 1184 (2019) — Laws 2019, Chapter 84 — amending A.R.S. §15-701.01; State Seal of Personal Finance Proficiency under A.R.S. §15-260.
Takes effect: Took effect for the 2019-2020 school year; already fully in force statewide today.
0.5 credit, delivered within the existing required Economics half-credit; no additional credit was added by SB 1184.
Arizona's requirement is an embedded requirement.
In practice that means the personal finance content lives inside another required course, so every graduate covers it without a separate class on their schedule.

Rapunzl is built on the Council for Economic Education's six pillars: earning income, spending, saving, investing, managing credit, and managing risk. Arizona folds personal finance into its Economics course, and the crosswalk above shows how Rapunzl covers both the financial literacy strand and the economics strands.
Yes. Because Arizona embeds personal finance in Economics, Rapunzl covers both: the six CEE pillars for the financial literacy strand and economics modules for the rest of the course.
Students learn by investing a simulated $10,000 in real market conditions, and teachers manage the class from a dashboard with grade export, bilingual materials, and screen-reader support.
